Fostering And Donations Critical During Dog Adoption Pause
The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society has temporarily stopped accepting or adopting out dogs after a case of canine distemper was confirmed. The virus, which does not affect humans, cats, or small animals, caused the death of one dog last week.
According to Dakota News Now, the Humane Society staff noticed symptoms early and quickly took action—cleaning, testing, and checking each dog’s vaccination records. “It was heartbreaking,” said community outreach director Dana Konzem. “But thanks to our cleaning and vaccination processes, most of our dogs are at medium to low risk.”

The pause couldn’t come at a worse time. Many local shelters and rescues say surrenders are increasing as families face financial struggles. Katie Day, director of Almost Home Canine Rescue, said that when the Humane Society closes its intakes, it puts more pressure on rescue groups that already have limited space.
To help, groups like Almost Home host free pet food giveaways every other week at the Minnehaha County Administration Building. The Humane Society also has a community food bank and accepts donations to help pet owners care for their animals. “We don’t want anyone choosing between feeding their kids and feeding their pets,” said Konzem.
Rescue groups encourage owners to reach out for help instead of surrendering their animals. They can often provide food, vaccinations, or short-term aid to keep pets in their homes.

Until testing is complete, dog adoptions will remain paused except for low-risk or foster dogs. The shelter will decide its next steps once results are in.
In the meantime, community members can help by fostering animals, donating supplies, or checking for microchips before bringing in a stray. Together, Sioux Falls hopes to keep its pets—and their people—safe and healthy.
