Christmas lights, and decorations, you go to great lengths and spend hours of time hanging them on your house and decorating your tree and home.

Now that the Christmas season is in the rearview mirror for another year, you're left with the dreaded task of taking all that stuff down and putting it away. No fun, I know!

The question becomes, when is the right time to put Santa and his nine tiny reindeer, all those bulbs, tinsel, and twinkling lights back in their boxes and tuck them away until next season?

Opinions can vary on that one, I used to work with someone who kept their Christmas tree and holiday decorations up until July! I'm serious! Obviously, the tree was an artificial one, but still, July? That's a little koo koo for Cocoa Puffs if you ask me.

The good folks, with Good Housekeeping who are well-versed in this type of thing, say the traditional time to de-Christmas one's home is on The Twelfth Night which is typically January 5 or 6th. (Depending on whether you count Christmas as the first day.)

The Twelfth Night, otherwise known as The Epiphany or Three Kings Day inside the Christian community commemorates the visit of the three wise men to baby Jesus in Bethlehem. That day typically marks the official end of the Christmas holiday season.

Folklore states if you leave your holiday decorations up too long after The Twelfth Night you're inviting all sorts of bad luck to come your way.

If that's true, my former co-worker who kept her Christmas tree up till July, must of had bad luck of biblical proportion. We're talking cracked mirrors, black cats crossing your path, walking under ladders, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria stuff!

Whenever you decide is the perfect time to tidy up the house after the holidays, just remember, that if you celebrated the season with a real Christmas tree, you don't have a lot of time to dispose of it.

The City of Sioux Falls will only accept Christmas trees at its two drop-off sites until Sunday, January 5th.

Both the East Chambers Street and North Lyon Boulevard locations are open Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM and Sunday from noon to 5 PM.
