If you're planning a road trip for Memorial Day weekend 2024 around Minnesota, Iowa, or South Dakota be prepared for heavy traffic and crowds. It's is going to be one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
According to AAA, a record-breaking 43.8 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles, a 4% increase from last year and close to the all-time high set in 2005.
Air travel is also expected to surge, with 3.5 million people anticipated to fly, a 5% increase from the previous year, making this Memorial Day weekend the busiest at airports since 2005.
For those driving, AAA recommends avoiding the roads during peak travel times.
On Thursday, May 23, and Friday, May 24, the best times to travel are before 11:00 A.M., while the times to avoid are between Noon and 6:00 P.M.
Traffic should be lighter on Saturday, but Sunday and Monday will also be congested, with the worst times being mid-day between 3:00 and 7:00 P.M.
The best times to travel on Sunday are before 1:00 P.M., and after 7:00 P.M. on Monday.
Regarding gas prices, AAA expects drivers to face similar costs as last year, with the national average hovering around $3.57 per gallon.
While prices were higher earlier in the spring, they have remained steady in recent weeks.
