Work on Sioux Falls New State-of-the-Art Skatepark to Begin in July
What's that saying, good things come to those who wait, well, that is certainly the case for the skateboarding community here in Sioux Falls.
Their wait is almost over. The groundbreaking for the new state-of-the-art Sioux Falls skatepark is finally expected to happen in early July.
Plans for the city's brand-new skatepark have been in the works for nearly seven years. After a rather lengthy fundraising period by the Sioux Falls Skatepark Association, now known as "Let's Skate", that generated 1.72 million dollars, the Sioux Falls City Council announced in May of 2022 that the city also planned to kick in an additional $800,000 in matching funds for the project. After that donation, the grand total reached 2.5 million. What's crazy, the folks with Let's Skate had originally set a goal of securing $500,000. So, as you can see, members throughout the community have really embraced the request for this new skatepark project.
Once completed, Sioux Falls' newest skatepark will be located inside Nelson Park, just off the corner of 10th Street and Cliff Avenue.
Let's Skate Executive Director, Walter Portz told Dakota News Now, “We will start construction July 1st, that’s our goal. It’s going out to bid in a couple of weeks. Once that all comes back and is settled in, we should be getting going pretty quick."
According to Dakota News Now, the great majority of work on the new Sioux Falls skatepark should be complete by November 1st. Obviously, skateboarders won't be able to take it for a test drive until next year.
Portz told Dakota News Now, the plan as of right now is to have an opening celebration event in early 2024 after construction is fully complete.
