A central South Dakota small-town murder case is one step closer to being fully resolved.

The case of a woman that was stabbed to death in Woonsocket, South Dakota will not go to trial. Attorney General Marty Jackley and Sanborn County States Attorney Jeffrey Larson announced via press release that 33 –year old Matthew Walter Novak pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree.

On August 31, 2016, Novak stabbed and killed Jennifer Gibson at their place of residence. A nearby school was temporarily in lockdown as a precaution.

A sentencing date will be set for some time in the future. The maximum penalty for First Degree Manslaughter is life in prison and/or a $50,000 fine.

Multiple organizations collaborated in the investigation including the Sanborn County Sheriff’s Office and the Division of Criminal Investigation.
