With chicken egg prices soaring across Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota, you might be wondering why we don't just pivot to another bird's eggs.

Turkey eggs, anyone?

Before you start stalking turkeys with your basket, here's why we're not all gobbling up turkey eggs.

Turns out, turkeys are the divas of the poultry world.

While your average chicken pops out about 300 eggs annually without much fuss, turkeys lay a measly 100 eggs per year.

They're like that coworker who does the bare minimum and still expects a promotion.

Also, turkeys need their beauty rest.

Unlike chickens who start laying at around 5 months old, turkeys make you wait 7 months before they get with the program.

They're essentially the teenagers of the bird world...sleeping in and contributing less.

The kicker? Turkeys are possessive helicopter parents.

They get so broody and protective over their eggs that farmers practically need hostage negotiators to collect them.

So while technically edible (and quite tasty), turkey eggs could cost you about $3 EACH. At that price, you might as well garnish your breakfast with gold leaf and call it a day.

Sorry, Midwest egg enthusiasts it looks like we're stuck with chicken eggs...until we can't afford those.
