What Is the Teal Pumpkin Project?
If you spot a 'teal' colored pumpkin on someones doorstep this Halloween while you have the kiddos out trick-or-treating, you did not encounter a home filled full of rabid Miami Dolphin fans like myself. No, instead, you've found a home that is sensitive to kids with food allergies.
Homes displaying teal colored pumpkins are taking part in something called the 'Teal Pumpkin Project.'
Halloween can be an extra scary night for families with kids who have food allergies. The parents of those little ghosts and goblins need to take extra time examining the labels on the treats their kids receive to make sure they are suitable for consumption.
The Teal Pumpkin Project aims to make their job an easier one, by designating homes that you know are going to be handing out food allergy friendly goodies.
The Teal Pumpkin Project was started in 2014 by the Food Allergy Research & Education foundation. The project is designed at raising awareness of food allergies and to help kids feel more included while they trick-or-treat.
It's super easy to participate, simply buy, or paint your pumpkin teal, place it on your doorstep, then give all your trick-or-treaters something other than candy. Experts recommend things like; toys, glow sticks, stencils, bouncy balls, stickers, etc.
The goal of the Teal Pumpkin Project is to make Halloween enjoyable for all. What's really cool, even people who aren't affected by allergies are taking part just to show their support.
