Two South Dakota race tracks have plans to race, with fans in the stands this weekend, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both the Raceway Race Track and ParkJefferson International Speedway plan to race on Saturday and Sunday and will allow limited fans.

Raceway Park will allow the least amount of fans with a smaller capacity and will limit the fans to 500 on Sunday.

Park Jefferson Speedway has a larger venue and will be allowing 700 fans for their races on Saturday evening.

From what I have been able to gather, the capacity for Park Jefferson is normally around 4,000 and Raceway Park is normally around 1,500.

According to KTIV.com, both owners are putting different requirements in place.

Steve Kiraly, owner of Raceway Park says they're taking the necessary precautions to keep people safe.

"Temperatures will be checked at the gate before entry. Facemasks will be required," said Kiraly. "We're also going to have hand sanitizer on board at several strategically located places here at the track along with all of the COVID-19 warning issues posted all over the place."

Park Jefferson International Speedway owner Adam Adamson said in a statement that they intend to comply with the CDC guidelines regarding social distancing and follow the guidance of state and local officials.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, people have been urged to stay home and avoid gathering in groups of more than 10 people. Many states have issued stay-at-home orders-- but South Dakota doesn't have this requirement right now.

"At this time, this is the only place in the country that is not breaking any laws by trying to run a race here at this time," said Kiraly.

This comes as the CDC has recommended no large gatherings and continues to reiterate that the most contagious period can be when you are not showing any symptoms early on in infection.

The ordinances in that area are only suggestions and are not enforceable by punishment, with local authorities issuing a statement on Facebook saying no laws will be violated if the races go on as planned.

It will be interesting to see if these do go on as planned or if someone from the state steps in and forces a postponement.
