Three Different Creepy South Dakota Spots to Visit This October
Welcome to the scary season!
If you're the type of person who loves to get creeped out, this year we get a double dose of spooky fun as both Friday the 13th and Halloween land during the month of October in 2023.
So, if you're looking for a few ways to get your spook on rather than sitting on the sofa with the lights off watching Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers marathons, you should consider hopping in the car and checking out a few of these South Dakota creepy locales if you dare!
We begin this terrifying tour with Super Creepy Spot #1, just a few minutes east of Sioux Falls near Brandon, South Dakota.
Long-time residents of the Sioux Empire are no doubt familiar with the legend of "Spook Road." I remember first hearing about Spook Road all the way back in high school in the late 70s. It has developed quite a reputation throughout the years as being one of the scariest spots in all of eastern South Dakota.
Spook Road can be found just outside of Brandon, off Highway 11 south of Huset's Speedway. This stretch of South Dakota road is said to be inhabited by ghostly-looking figures hanging from trees at night. Legend has it a number of people were hung from its several bridges years ago. According to OnlyInYourState, as you drive down Spook Road you'll cross five different bridges, but only four on the way back. Maybe the people who have tried, just can't count all that well. I guess you'll need to be the judge.
Need a little more convincing, check out this video of Spook Road.
Super Creepy Spot #2 will require a little bit of a road trip out to western South Dakota to visit the infamous haunted Bullock Hotel in Deadwood.
The Bullock has a rep for being one of the most haunted hotels in the entire nation. It was even featured on the TV series Unsolved Mysteries. Legend has it Sheriff Seth Bullock still haunts this legendary hotel to this day. According to the folks at OnlyInYourState, numerous hotel guests are said to have encountered what they believe to be Bullock himself playing the piano and smoking cigars. Guests have also claimed to witness orbs and other unexplained apparitions while staying at the Bullock.
The Bullock does a great job of keeping its haunted legend alive by offering a daily ghost tour every evening at 5:30.
Super Creepy Spot #3 will also require another bit of road-trippin'. This time north of Sioux Falls to Sica Hollow State Park near Sisseton South Dakota on 44950 Park Road.
This haunted South Dakota spot is beautiful by day, and very scary by night. Filled with many cool trails and natural wildlife, Sica Hollow allegedly has red-tinted water gushing out of one of its springs, and the sound of drums and other mysterious-looking figures that can be heard and spotted at night. To top things off, according to OnlyInYourState, several people back in the 70s supposedly just vanished without a trace. And word has it, that Bigfoot himself has even been spotted roaming the wooded area of Sica Hollow.
There you have it, three haunted South Dakota spots that in theory will give you a good chance to witness a little paranormal activity this Friday the 13th, and Halloween.
The only thing that might be scarier than visiting these three haunted South Dakota locations is having to pay for the gas to get there.
