The Ultimate Big Game Snack List for South Dakota

The Big Game is just days away, and you're hearing a lot of talk about what kind of food spreads will show up at parties. Here in South Dakota, the tendency is to feature hearty, comforting, and local favorites.

While I agree with many of the choices, I can't believe that nowhere on this list will you find weinies and meatballs in barbecue sauce. I mean, that is a party staple across the board and not just on Super Bowl Sunday. Plus, where's the Chex Party mix or Puppy Chow? Am I right?

Spinach-Artichoke Dip: A Surprisingly Popular Choice

According to The Kitchn, the most-searched-for Super Bowl Sunday party snack in South Dakota is Spinach-Artichoke dip. I'm not disputing that the deliciously creamy dip could be very popular, but number one?

The rest of South Dakota's favorite big game snacks are these:

  • Pizza - Come on, this is a given for any Super Bowl gathering!
  • Chislic - After all, this is our official "state nosh". Skewered, cubed, deep-fried meats with garlic salt. How can you go wrong?
  • Wings - Although I'm not a huge wing fan, I know these are also party staples for a lot of people, particularly for the Super Bowl.
  • Bierocks (Runzas) - This delicious yeast dough pocket filled with ground beef or pork, onions, and cabbage is one of my favorites. Black Hills Visitor implies these could show up this Sunday. But on this side of our state, I'm not sure you'd find these on a Big Game day buffet.
  • Snacks - This one was listed with pretzels and barbecue sauce. I  doubt they meant to dip pretzels in barbecue sauce, but whatever floats your boat. I'm thinking that this category may be where you'd find the chips, Cheetos, Doritos, and other dips.

Nostalgic Bites: The Heart of Super Bowl Snacking

Food and Wine says that overall, Americans are snacking on things they refer to as "nostalgic party bites", saucy wings, and homemade goodies.
