Under the heading of “Firearms and Higher Education,” some South Dakota Senators want kids to be able to carry concealed handguns on college campuses.

Republican Senator Mykala Voita of the Bonesteel area, who introduced the legislation as a prime sponsor, defended the proposal:

Sen. Mykala Voita stated: “I just really feel that as a constitutional carry state, it’s very wrong of us to tell 18-year-old kids, 18-year-old adults, that just because you step foot on a state university or a technical school, your second amendment right is null and void.”

Senate Bill 100 reads: “prohibit the imposition of restrictions on the carrying of a concealed pistol and other items of self-defense while on the campus of a public institution of higher education.”

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, a child's brain continues to develop into a person's mid to late 20s.

The brain's frontal lobe, which controls higher cognitive functions, is the last part of the brain to fully develop.
