South Dakota Cities On ‘Most Expensive Homes to Heat’ List
We've had some bitterly cold weather for the last couple of weeks and our furnaces have had a real workout keeping up with the frigid temps. But what about our wallets?
The Home Gnome blog got busy comparing cities to determine which ones had homes that were the most expensive to heat in winter. They looked at 500 cities across the U.S. to come up with their conclusions.

The cities were compared in 3 major categories: Average electricity and gas bills, average home sizes, and weather conditions.
Average electricity price data was collected at the local level and adjusted by average monthly household income, while average natural gas price data was collected at the state level and adjusted by both average monthly household income and cost of living. Home Gnome
You might think that South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa cities would show up in the top 25 most expensive, but you would be wrong.
Rapid City showed up in 57th place and Sioux Falls came in 81st. So there are plenty of other places and spaces that are more expensive to heat than here.
Cedar Rapids, Iowa landed in 36th place, and Sioux City in 45th. In Minnesota, Duluth placed 54th.
In case you're wondering the top 5 most expensive home-heating states are:
- Cleveland, Ohio
- Dayton, Ohio
- Independence, Missouri
- St. Joseph, Missouri
- Flint, Michigan
So according to Home Gnome, many other cities have higher winter heating bills than we do here.
I wish they could explain that to my gas and electric company.
