Sioux Falls Middle School Student behind Social Media Hoax Wednesday
The Sioux Falls School District had to deal with another social media threat on Wednesday, (September 18). Fortunately, Wednesday's threat ended up being another hoax like the one that originated early last week which was also quickly debunked.
Dakota News Now is reporting that Sioux Falls Police are investigating a middle school student who is believed to be behind this latest social media threat hoax.
Police told Dakota News Now on Wednesday that they were in contact with the family of the middle school student who is allegedly the source of a threat that circulated overnight on social media.
Classes were held in Sioux Falls Public Schools on Wednesday after authorities determined that the threat was non-credible and there was no threat to any of the district's schools.
The Sioux Falls School District released a statement on Wednesday that emphasized when hoax threats of this nature circulate, it is best to report the threat, and not repost it.
The statement from the district said:
We cannot stress this enough: students and families must know there are significant consequences to threatening school safety. These are never considered “just a joke.” We appreciate those who notified us of this post following the “See Something, Say Something” protocol. Reposting a threat does nothing to stop the threat – it only creates fear and misinformation. Remember, report. Don’t repost.
