School bells have already started ringing throughout the Sioux Empire, and Sioux Falls Schools are set to kick off their new school year on Thursday, (August 22).

With school back in session, the Sioux Falls Police Department is busy issuing a little reminder to motorists to be mindful of speed limits inside school zones.

Given it's been a few months since you've had to watch out for kiddos near schools, the Sioux Falls PD wants to make sure everyone remembers the 15mph speed limit in and around Sioux Falls schools when children are present during the morning and afternoon hours.

SLOW DOWN is the message the PD wants everyone to be aware of, and they will be monitoring speed limits inside school zones over the coming days and weeks, so be prepared to get stopped if you get caught breaking the law.

Sergeant Travis Olsen with the Sioux Falls Police Department told Dakota News Now, “We will be staffing officers around schools over the next couple of weeks for that education component, to try and slow down motorists around our schools and remind the public of school zone safety, We can’t staff every school, every single day with an officer necessarily. Between the school resources officers, our traffic officers, and the saturation officers, many of our schools you will likely see an officer around it at some point over the next few weeks for sure. Some of them more than others.”

Again, the police department's message to Sioux Falls drivers right now is simple: “Please slow down, buckle up, and watch for children." Practice public safety.

Be on the lookout for school buses too. They're hauling precious cargo every day.

Remember, South Dakota law requires drivers to stop when approaching a school bus with red flashing lights, regardless of direction. Motorists must remain stopped at least 15 feet from the bus until the lights stop flashing. Failure to do so could result in a citation and a fine.
