Parents Alerted To Cybersecurity Incident Affecting Sioux Falls Public Schools
Cybersecurity issues; no person or place of business is immune to online threats.
Just ask the Sioux Falls School District; earlier this week, they had a security issue arise with a program they use every day in the district.
The Sioux Falls School District reported a security incident involving Canvas, the learning platform used by students, teachers, and parents across the district. Canvas serves as the main digital hub for K-12 education in Sioux Falls, giving users access to assignments, grades, class materials, and communication tools. Whether students are in the classroom, learning from home during a snow day, or using a hybrid schedule, Canvas plays a big role in daily school life.

According to a report from Dakota News Now, district officials sent a message to parents on the evening of Wednesday, May 6, alerting them to the situation. The notice explained that certain user information may have been exposed during the incident. This includes names, email addresses, home addresses, student ID numbers, and messages sent within the Canvas system.
While that may sound somewhat alarming, the district stressed that no more sensitive information was affected. Passwords, birth dates, and any financial details were not part of the breach. In addition, the school district says its internal systems remain secure and were not affected.
At this time, Sioux Falls Public Schools says no immediate action is required from families. However, parents and students are encouraged to stay alert. If you receive an email that looks like it’s coming from Canvas, double-check the sender before clicking any links or sharing information. When in doubt, go directly to the official Canvas app or website instead of using email links.
