Police Warn Of Church Parking Lot Burglaries In Sioux Falls
If you're under the assumption that your car is safe while you are inside a church saying a prayer or singing a hymn, Sioux Falls police say it might be time to add “lock the doors and hide your valuables” before going inside to worship.
Authorities are currently investigating a troubling string of vehicle burglaries taking place in church parking lots across the city. According to Dakota News Now, officers are searching for a man suspected of smashing car windows and stealing valuables from vehicles while they’re parked in church lots.
One of the latest incidents happened on February 14 near East 26th Street and South Cleveland Avenue. In that case, the victim reported cash, credit cards, and other personal items stolen from their vehicle. Police say the suspect didn’t waste any time putting those stolen cards to use, allegedly going on a shopping spree at several stores around the Sioux Empire.

Altogether, officials estimate the most recent case resulted in about $4,000 in combined theft and vehicle damage.
Unfortunately, the Valentine's Day incident wasn't an isolated case. Two similar break-ins were reported earlier that same week. The first occurred on February 9 at a church near 11th Street and Dakota Avenue. The second happened February 10 near 29th Street and 5th Avenue. In all three cases, investigators say the pattern is nearly identical: smashed windows, valuables taken, and fraudulent purchases made shortly afterward.
Police believe they have obtained a photo of the suspect connected to the crimes, but are still working to confirm his identity and track down his whereabouts.
