World Naked Gardening Day is coming up on May 3rd this year. Because of that, Lawnstarter went ahead and studied 500 of the country's largest cities to see how friendly they would be to gardeners in the buff.

They considered all kinds of statistics like the nudist population in each city, public nudity laws, Google search interest, and of course, the weather.

If you were thinking about doing some nude weeding in Sioux Falls next weekend for World Naked Gardening Day, you'd better think again. Not only is our weather destined to be a bit cool that day, but nude friendliness in our fair city is way down there.

In fact, even Rapid City had a higher ranking than Sioux Falls did. Rapid City's rank out of the top 500 largest cities in the U.S. is 417, and Sioux Falls came in 461st. Not to mention that authorities in both cities would frown on such a fleshy display in anyone's garden - private or not.

The Top 5 Best Cities for Naked Gardening are:

  1. Miami, FL
  2. Seattle, WA
  3. Austin, TX
  4. Atlanta, GA
  5. Asheville, NC

The Worst Cities for Naked Gardening are:

  1. Hammond, IN
  2. Woodbury, MN
  3. Brooklyn Park, MN
  4. Bloomington, MN
  5. Plymouth, MN

As you can see, the warm weather wins out down south, except for Seattle, where you'd need an umbrella for some "au naturale" tilling. And look at all the Minnesota cities where you can't plant your perennials in a disrobed state.

I suggest that we just salute those brave gardeners who choose to get bug bites in unmentionable places, while we stick with shirts and pants.
