It's estimated that the scenic Effigy Mounds were constructed around 1000 years ago along the Upper Mississippi River.
A trip to eastern Iowa could start your adventure through over 200 hundred Effigy Mounds that are considered a cultural phenomenon.
Haunted Places says, “The historic Indian Mounds are said to be haunted by the spirits of the Native Americans. Residents who live nearby have reported ghostly moans on the wind at night.”
The mounds of earth are built in the shapes of birds, bears, deer, bison, lynx, turtle, panther or water spirits.
The mound builders also used these earthen structures as burial grounds for their dead.
Officials say that up to 3 people were buried in a single mound sometimes one on top of the other in successive years.
There are many hiking trails throughout the park including a secret boardwalk path.
According to All Trails, “There’s a secret boardwalk hiking trail in Effigy Mounds, hidden off the beaten path from the rest of the monument, that offers stunning views and wildlife viewing opportunities.
At only 0.8 miles for an easy out-and-back trail, the Yellow River Bridge Trail is a true hidden gem.”
