Sioux Falls recreation trail users should prepare for temporary disruptions as the city undertakes important floodplain improvements along the Big Sioux River Recreation Trail.

City maintenance crews are currently working on a section of trail located approximately one-quarter mile east of Cliff Avenue, north of Tuthill Park. The project involves clearing brush and removing ash trees and other trees that have reached the end of their life cycle.

This clearing work is essential preparation for earthwork that will enhance the area's flood management capabilities. Once clearing is complete, crews will excavate material to improve how the river handles water flow during flood events, ultimately protecting the trail and surrounding areas from future flooding.

Trail users should exercise caution during construction. Vehicles will be operating on and near the trail to transport materials, and everyone is advised to stay clear of active work zones for their safety.

The city is committed to environmental stewardship throughout this project. After grading work concludes, approximately 200 new trees will be planted in the disturbed area, ensuring the landscape is restored and enhanced for future generations to enjoy.

Weather permitting, the entire project is expected to wrap up in about one month. While the temporary inconvenience may require trail users to adjust their routes, these improvements represent a significant investment in the long-term resilience and sustainability of Sioux Falls' beloved recreation trail system.

For updates on project progress, residents can check the city's website or contact the Parks and Recreation Department.
