After being let out of the house, Othoudt's 4-year-old mini Australian Shepherd named Jack, and 8-month-old Golden Retriever Winston didn't return home for dinner, so they went out looking for the dogs.

According to CBS News, Kim Othoudt stated, “We were passing the neighbor's driveway and I saw something brown and I'm like, back up, I think I see something.”

Kim and her husband got out and found their dogs Jack and Winston shot dead laying in their neighbor's driveway.

CBS News reported that Sherburne County investigators report the neighbor said that the dogs had been chasing deer on his property and when he went outside to yell at the dogs they started coming at him.

Deputies say the neighbor admitted to shooting at the dogs to scare them.

Othoudt reflected that "There's a million other ways he could have handled it. He could have called us. He could have called the pound. He could have called the cops. He could have done a million things."
