Minnesotans might have the gear to handle the cold weather, but when the National Weather Service tells you not to go outside, there is a good reason.

Cold Weather Advisory, Extreme Cold Watch, Extreme Cold Warning, Freeze Watches and Warnings are all alerts that the NWS could send out when severe winter weather is a possibility in Southeast Minnesota.  If the storm is anticipated to last long, these words are also our hint to stock up on a few essential items at the grocery store.

Rochester, Minnesota sees about 55 days a year where there is a measurable snowfall.  And when that snow is perfect for making snowmen, enjoy those moments and make those memories.  However, there are times when staying in your Cuddle-duds and watching Netflix should be the only thing on your to-do list until the storm passes.

If you were in Minnesota or Iowa in the 90s, you will never forget the horrific storm on Halloween.  I was a kid in Iowa and remember going out trick-or-treating while it was snowing.  It was so pretty!  But when we woke up the next morning, ice coated trees and power lines and caused a lot of power outages, including at my house for weeks.  We didn't have power, our house was freezing, and my family had to go live with others in the community who had a wood fireplace.
