Have You Visited Iowa’s Most Beloved Dive Bars? [GALLERY]
The state of Iowa has plenty of local dives, but which one is the very best?
Before we get into Iowa's favorite dive bar, let's talk about what makes a bar a dive bar. Wikipedia says:
"A dive bar is typically a small, unglamorous, eclectic, old-style drinking establishment with inexpensive drinks; it may feature dim lighting, shabby or dated decor, neon beer signs, packaged beer sales, cash-only service, and local clientele."
According to an MSN article from Finance Buzz, the best dive bar in Iowa is Carl's Place in Des Moines. Located at 1620 Woodland Ave in the Sherman Hill neighborhood, positive reviews of the bar mention an extensive beer selection, strong drinks, friendly people, good (and loud) music, and a fun atmosphere. As L B's Google review says: "it's a disaster, but it's perfect."
Carl's Place is also mentioned in a 2023 article from the Iowa Starting Line. They asked Facebook users about their favorite Iowa dive bars, and Carl's Place was, by far, the most popular response. Here are some of the ones in Eastern Iowa that were mentioned:
