Minnesota Mother Charged With Murdering Two of Her Children

Duluth, MN (KROC-AM News) - Federal charges have been filed against a Minnesota woman accused of murdering two of her children.

The US Attorney for Minnesota today announced that 35-year-old Jennifer Marie Stately, who is a resident of the Red Lake Indian Reservation has been indicted on federal murder, arson, and child neglect charges.

According to the charges, Stately used a knife or other sharp object to attack the children. One of the victims died from a stab wound to the chest, while the other child survived the knife attack but died from smoke inhalation from a fire allegedly set by their mother.

It was alleged that Stately then fled in her vehicle with a third child. When authorities learned of the situation, an AMBER Alert was issued.

Federal prosecutors say a motorist who had received the alert spotted her vehicle and contacted law enforcement. A news release says officers then located the vehicle, stopped Stately, and safely recovered the third child who was suffering from visible signs of child neglect.

“This case is another example of how AMBER Alerts save lives. They get critical information out quickly to millions of Minnesotans willing to step up to help rescue a child in mortal danger,” BCA Superintendent Drew Evans said. “We are grateful to the Minnesotan who acted quickly and bravely in this case, and to all Minnesotans who join in the search when a child needs them most.”

Stately appeared before a federal judge in Duluth today and was ordered to remain in custody pending further proceedings.
