Walnuts Sold in South Dakota, 18 Other States, Recalled

A possible E. coli contamination has prompted the recall of a product sold in South Dakota and 18 other states.

The Food & Drug Administration has issued the recall of organic walnut halves and pieces from Hollister, California-based Gibson Farms.

The recall comes after Gibson received information that the walnuts may have the potential to be contaminated with E. Coli 0157:H7, which can cause a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.

The Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts were sold in bulk boxes in 25 pound quantities and can be identified by lot numbers 3325-043 and 3341-501 with expiration dates of 5/21/25 and 6/7/25.

Those walnuts were sold in bulk bins at six different South Dakota locations, as well as in 18 other states:

The FDA advises customers to discard any of the product they might have on hand. The agency is also telling retailers that have or had recalled product in bulk bins to discard the contents of the bins and use extra care to clean and sanitize the bins before refilling.
