Iowa Has Now Banned Handheld Phone Use While Driving

Using a handheld device while driving in Iowa could now get you a big fine. 

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed the legislation Wednesday to combat distracted driving in the state.

The new law, which takes effect July 1, will only permit drivers to use mobile devices in hands-free mode.

Iowa lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the bill before sending it to the governor's desk.

To give Iowans time to adjust to the new regulations, law enforcement will issue warnings rather than citations for violations through the end of 2025.

Beginning January 1, 2026, full enforcement with penalties will commence, including a $100 fine.
