We've been lucky to have supermoons over the last two months and will have another two coming up in October and November. But what exactly is a supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when a full moon happens at or near its closest point to Earth in its oval-shaped orbit. Supermoons appear larger and brighter than other full moons and this month's supermoon is no exception.

In fact, the Hunter's Moon will be the biggest and brightest one because it will be the closest supermoon of the year!

This supermoon experience will be at its brightest around 6:26 AM Central time on Thursday, October 17.

The Hunter's Moon is the first full moon following September's Harvest Moon and got its nickname because it was believed to be a signal to hunters to prepare for the long winter season by going hunting.

Other nicknames for October's supermoon are Blood Moon (also thought to do with hunting) and Drying Rice Moon (a Dakota name describing the process of drying wild rice for winter), among others.

Whether you're an avid astronomer or simply looking to enjoy the beauty of nature, the Hunter's Moon Supermoon promises an awesome experience. Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 17, and prepare for an unforgettable sight.

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
