The infamous RMS Titanic was a British luxury passenger ship that tragically sank during its maiden voyage in April 1912 after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic.

The “Unsinkable” Titanic was built by Harland and Wolff and operated by the White Star Line. It was considered one of the most advanced and largest ships of its time.

The disaster resulted in the deaths of over 1,500 people and exposed major shortcomings in maritime safety practices, leading to significant changes in international shipping laws.

Of the many that perished in the icy waters of the Atlantic on April 15th 1912 these are probably the 12 best-known people who died in the RMS Titanic sinking:

John Jacob Astor IV: One of the richest men in the world at the time; a prominent American millionaire.

Benjamin Guggenheim: Member of the wealthy Guggenheim family; reportedly faced death in formal evening wear.

Isidor Straus: Co-owner of Macy’s department store.

Ida Straus: Wife of Isidor Straus; chose to remain with him rather than board a lifeboat.

Thomas Andrews: The ship’s designer from Harland and Wolff; helped passengers before perishing.

Captain Edward Smith: The captain of the Titanic, widely remembered for going down with the ship.

Wallace Hartley: Led the band that famously continued playing music as the ship sank.

Charles Melville Hays: President of the Grand Trunk Railway.

William Thomas Stead: Influential journalist and early investigative reporter.

Jacques Futrelle: Author known for detective fiction.

Francis Davis Millet: Painter and writer.

Major Archibald Butt: Military aide to U.S. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft.

These individuals came from different backgrounds...business, politics, arts, and engineering, but all became part of the Titanic’s enduring historical story.
