Ya, so I stole the title of this story from Baz Luhrmann. So what? I'm giving him credit so it's fine.

Anyway, it's Summer and that means we need to take care of our skin and put on that sunscreen.

Here are some facts about the sun and your skin.

  • You can still get a sunburn on a cloudy day. (Contrary to what Andy thinks he knows.)  Clouds only block about 20% of UV rays.
  • Even in the shade you are still exposed to UV rays. The rays actually bounce off of stuff like sand and water.
  •  Just because you didn't or don't get sunburns doesn't mean you don't need sunscreen. Any amount of sun exposure can be bad for your skin.
  • If you're on a road trip, don't think the windows of your car are protecting you. Glass only filters out UVB rays, but UVA rays can still get through. I'm gonna drop some knowledge on ya- people are more likely to have freckles on the left side of their faces because of driving! Crazy, right!
  • Also, did you know the sun can be harmful to your eyes too! UV rays play a role in about 20% of cataract cases. So look for sunglasses that block UV rays and if you wear regular glasses they should have UV protection too!

Moral of the story, sunscreen is your friend. And don't forget to reapply!
