Sioux Falls Residents Urged To Renew Licenses Right Away

If your South Dakota driver’s license is due for renewal anytime soon, consider this a friendly reminder from the motor vehicle universe not to wait. Because right now, procrastination and license renewals are a terrible combo, especially in eastern South Dakota, where appointment slots are getting snapped up faster than front-row parking at a Hyvee on a Saturday morning.

Last June, the Sioux Falls Driver’s License Exam Station relocated from Russell Street to a brand-new facility on South Highline Drive on the east side of town. The building itself isn’t the issue; it’s modern, spacious, and designed to make the process smoother. The real slowdown comes from staffing shortages affecting several exam stations across the region. According to Dakota News Now, reduced staffing has forced some locations to close temporarily, sending drivers from all over eastern South Dakota searching for other places to renew. Naturally, many of them are heading straight to Sioux Falls.

That surge in demand has created a backlog of appointments. As of February 24, the earliest available opening for a renewal appointment wasn’t until March 19! So if your expiration date is creeping closer, you’ll want to schedule as soon as you receive your reminder postcard in the mail.

There is a silver lining, however.

Once you actually get in the door, the process is quick. Most renewals take about 20 minutes, meaning the hardest part is landing the appointment.

There are a couple of newer updates to keep in mind, too. License fees went up last July, so renewing a standard driver’s license now costs $38, while a commercial license runs $43. Also, licenses issued after July 1, 2025, now display whether the holder is a U.S. citizen, following recent legislation passed by the state.

So, when it comes to renewing your license here in eastern South Dakota, early birds don’t just get the worm; they get an appointment before it expires on you.
