A life-threatening arctic air mass is descending on South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa, bringing hazardous conditions including dangerous wind, wind chills, and snow,
Immediate Threats Today
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Winter Weather Advisory is active until 6 PM Wednesday across portions of northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota, and southeast South Dakota.
While snow accumulations will remain modest at up to one inch, fierce winds gusting to 55 mph will create treacherous blowing snow conditions.
Visibility will drop rapidly, with brief whiteout conditions expected during the evening commute.
Extreme Cold Arrives Thursday
The most dangerous phase begins Thursday evening, when an Extreme Cold Watch takes effect through Friday afternoon.
Wind chill values could plummet to 38-40 degrees below zero—cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in just 10 minutes.
Actual air temperatures are forecast to reach -25 to -40 degrees Thursday night into Friday morning, marking some of the coldest conditions in recent memory.

Residents should limit outdoor exposure and dress in multiple layers, including hats, face masks, and insulated gloves.
