Lots of folks in Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota love the great selection of books at Costco stores. That's about to change.

There are almost 600 Costco stores across the United States.

In a move that could significantly impact the publishing industry, Costco has informed publishing executives of its plan to drastically scale back book sales at its stores nationwide starting in January 2025.

The New York Times is reporting four publishing executives who wished to remain anonymous as the decision has not been publicly announced, Costco intends to stop stocking books regularly.

Instead, you'll only be able to find your favorite reading materials during the holiday shopping season from September through December each year.

For the remaining months, Costco stores may carry some book titles intermittently, but not with any consistent availability.

This shift away from year-round book offerings is primarily driven by the labor-intensive process of stocking books on shelves by hand, unlike other products that can be easily unloaded on pallets, the executives revealed.

Additionally, the constant turnover of new book releases every Tuesday and the need to return unsold copies added to the operational complexities, ultimately leading Costco to discontinue its regular book inventory outside of the peak holiday period.
