Brandon South Dakota Suspect Presumed Dead After Standoff Fire
A standoff in Brandon, South Dakota ended tragically Wednesday when a house fire broke out during an attempt to serve multiple arrest warrants.
According to Dakota News Now the suspect, whose name has not been released, is presumed deceased.
The incident began around 2 p.m. when U.S. Marshals and Brandon Police attempted to serve warrants at a residence at 113 West Conifer Street in Brandon.
The suspect, who was wanted on multiple felony charges including drug offenses and weapons violations in Lincoln County, responded by opening fire on law enforcement.
After the initial gunfire, authorities established a perimeter and called in the Minnehaha County SWAT Team and Sioux Falls Police Department for support.
Despite attempts at negotiation and the use of chemical agents, the suspect repeatedly fired from inside the home while refusing to communicate with law enforcement.
During the approximately six-hour standoff, a fire erupted in the residence following the deployment of additional chemical agents.
The blaze spread quickly through the structure, and the suspect remained inside.
Due to extensive smoke and structural damage, law enforcement has not yet been able to enter the building.
According to Minnehaha County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jeff Gromer, no law enforcement personnel or members of the public were injured during the incident. Law enforcement did not discharge their weapons at any point during the standoff.
The Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case. Officials have stated there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
