America’s National Debt Just Hit A Mind-Blowing New Record
If you thought the price of just about everything was getting ridiculous, wait until you see the latest number attached to the U.S. national debt.
The nation’s total public debt has now climbed past the $40 trillion mark, reaching about $40.09 trillion in mid-September 2026.
Treasury data showed total public debt outstanding at roughly $40.09 trillion on September 17.
That is a number so large it is almost impossible to wrap your head around. To put it another way, the debt works out to approximately $117,279 for every American and nearly $297,522 per household, according to a September analysis from the Congressional Joint Economic Committee.
So where does all this debt come from?
Basically, when the federal government spends more money than it collects in taxes and other revenue, it runs a budget deficit.
The government borrows to cover that shortfall, and those accumulated deficits become part of the national debt.
And the number continues to move. The Joint Economic Committee reported that the debt was about $2.67 trillion higher than a year earlier as of September 3.
Here are some eye-popping numbers:
• Total national debt: About $40.09 trillion
• Per American: About $117,279
• Per household: About $297,522
• Debt held by the public: About $32.4 trillion
• Intragovernmental holdings: About $7.7 trillion
