They say one is the loneliest number, and according to a recent study, we South Dakotans know that all too well.

When it comes to people living by themselves, South Dakota ranks near the top of all 50 states.

247WallSt.com conducted a study recently that showed South Dakota is the third loneliest state in the nation. We're bested only by New Mexico and our friends up in North Dakota who received the prestigious position of being #1.

The study revealed that South Dakota has the third most people living alone in the entire country.

In 2022 31.8% of the households in South Dakota were one-person households.

I would have guessed the top 3 loneliest states would have been Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska. You know, states that are considered to be rather remote and off the grid. But that's not the case. North Dakota, New Mexico, and South Dakota outrank them when it comes to people living by themselves.

247WallSt.com compiled its list using Census Bureau data that ranked every state by non-family households living alone.

Their findings showed there are 47,353 1-person households over the age of 65 in South Dakota. And an additional 69,896 1-person households under the age of 65 in the Rushmore state. That stat is the 4th highest in the nation.

Of the entire adult population in South Dakota, 16.8% of us currently live alone. A number large enough to be the 2nd highest in the nation.

By the looks of these statistics, Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" should be our theme song.

The 247WallSt.com study showed the average monthly gross rent in South Dakota is $866.00. No doubt our low cost of living plays a huge role in why so many of us choose to live alone. It's relatively easy to make a go of it alone in South Dakota, unlike so many other states in the nation.

Whatever the reasons may be, it appears living alone is something a large number of us here in South Dakota don't seem to mind.

I'm going to leave you with another lonely anthem from 70s artist Gilbert O'Sullivan. Enjoy!
