If you’ve spent any time around the Sioux Empire music scene over the past few decades, chances are you’ve either seen Zwarte live, owned one of their albums, or at the very least heard someone say, “You should have been at this show!” Well, Sioux Falls fans are about to get another chance to be there when one of South Dakota’s most beloved homegrown rock bands returns to town this spring.

According to Dakota News Now, the group Zwarte is set to hit the stage at The Alliance in Sioux Falls on Friday, April 10, bringing with them a legacy that stretches back nearly four decades. Tickets start at $25 and go on sale Friday, February 27, at 10:00 AM, so if you want a spot close enough to feel the amps thumping your ribcage, you might want to set a reminder.

Formed in 1987 by brothers Randall Zwart (vocals/guitar) and Bob Zwart (drums), the band quickly became a force across South Dakota and the Midwest club scene. They were later joined by guitarist Eddie Filarecki and bassist Baron Duncam, rounding out a lineup that would become a staple on regional stages from Sioux Falls bars to packed festival grounds. During the late ’80s and throughout the ’90s, Zwarte built a reputation for high-energy shows, loyal fans, and a sound that blended classic rock grit with original edge.

Zwarte has released over a dozen albums since its inception, and has earned recognition beyond the region. In 2015, Randall Zwart received a Los Angeles Music Award for Producer’s Choice and Outstanding TV Theme Song for Take the Ride to Sturgis,” a nod that proved their music resonated far beyond South Dakota.

Sadly, Randall passed away from cancer in April 2020 at age 57, a loss deeply felt across the state’s music community. But true to their rock-and-roll roots, Zwarte has kept the spirit alive, continuing to perform the music that built their following.

Now, they’re bringing that legacy and those unmistakable riffs back to Sioux Falls. For longtime fans, it’s a reunion. For newer listeners, it’s a chance to experience a band that helped shape the region’s rock history. Either way, April 10 at The Alliance is shaping up to be a night Sioux Empire music lovers won’t want to miss, and won't soon forget.
