In South Dakota you are paying more for gasoline, food, healthcare insurance, and now your electric bill.

The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission officially approved a settlement stipulation allowing Xcel Energy to increase its overall electric rates.

South Dakotans will see an increase in electric bills of 9.5% ($25.6 million annually) beginning July 1, 2026.

This finalized rate is a 41% reduction from Xcel Energy's original request for a 16.2% ($43.6 million) hike.

The decision directly impacts roughly 107,000 customers located primarily in the Sioux Falls region.

So how will the cost increase Impact on residential bills?

Monthly Increase:

A typical residential customer utilizing 750 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month will see an estimated bill increase of $13.48 per month (moving from $109.81 to $123.30).

Mandatory Customer Refunds:

Because Xcel Energy has been collecting a higher 19% interim rate from customers since January 1, 2026, the company must issue a one-time refund. The average residential customer will receive a credit of approximately $43.52 on their August or September 2026 bills.

Future Rate Freeze:

The signed agreement includes a rate moratorium, legally preventing Xcel Energy from requesting another base rate increase until January 1, 2029.

Reasons Cited for the Hike

As noted in the regulatory filings reviewed by the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission, Xcel Energy justified the price adjustments based on:

System Infrastructure:

Funding capital improvements for electric generation facilities, local transmission networks, and the replacement of aging technology.

Macroeconomic Pressures:

Compounding operational and material costs driven by regional inflation over the past three years.
