It’s possible that being a distant friend foiled a robbery attempt on Tuesday (July 11) in Sioux Falls. A level-headed clerk kept her cool and the suspect came away empty.

Sioux Falls Police Department Public Information Officer Sam Clemens provided details of the incident which took place at 10:00 PM on the 800 block of S. Minnesota. The woman behind the counter knew the suspect from somewhere else.

“She recognized him. He made the comment that she needed to open the register and get money. (Initially) she thought it was a joke. It was probably a coincidence that she happened to be working there at the time.”

Clemens indicated that the 41-year old suspect continued to talk with the clerk even after someone else came to the counter. That customer bought some items and went on their way then another attempt was made.

“The guy still hung out during that time, then tried again to get some money. He showed a hand gun and the two talked a little more. She wasn’t sure what to do, so she picked up the phone to call her manager. He thought she was calling 9-1-1 so he left.”

According to police, the suspect has been identified, but had not been located yet. Additionally there were no injuries and no money was taken.
