
Why Fall Is Secretly South Dakota’s Best Season
If there were a survey on weather preferences in South Dakota, I'm sure most people would choose summer as their favorite season. I hear that opinion a lot, but I feel very differently.
To me, the best season in South Dakota is Fall. In Autumn, the temperatures and humidity drop to a much more comfortable level, not to mention all the beautiful colors that come out in the fall.

So, what exactly are we expecting for fall weather this year? We, of course, had to turn to the Old Farmer's Almanac to get a peek at what is coming for autumn weather.
Typically, South Dakota's fall weather is cooler and much less humid than the summer months, although we have had some fairly hot Septembers. So hot, in fact, that it made one wish the city pools were still open.
Overall, South Dakota's Fall 2025 forecast is predicting cooler temperatures and slightly above average rainfall. But it does depend on where you live in the state, and it falls into an east and west river kind of split.

If you live West River, your autumn weather is predicted to be warm and wet, with a warm September and more normal temperatures for October. East River, including Sioux Falls, is supposed to have cooler and drier than average conditions.
No matter what kind of fall weather we get, I look forward to less humidity, bugs, and yard work. And, I also look forward to falling leaves, fall traditions, and pumpkin spice - everything! Call me weird, but that's how I feel. How about you?
