Midwest Munchie Lovers, South Dakota and Iowa Fair Food Fans
You're probably wondering, "Who doesn't love fair food?". But there are fair food haters out there. I don't know them personally, but they exist. So I hear.
Proof positive is this new state fair food survey that has some surprising results. The state that loves its fair food the most is Vermont. I was sure it would be a midwestern state or even Texas. But Vermont? Hmm.
The Texas State Fair attracts two and a quarter million people every year making it the largest state fair in the country!
Here are the Top Ten State Fair Food loving states:
- Vermont
- Ohio
- South Dakota
- West Virginia
- Washington
- Arkansas
- North Dakota
- Tennessee
- Florida
- Iowa
If you're wondering where Minnesota landed, it was quite a ways from the top in 32nd place. All I know is that when I was at the Minnesota State Fair, we were all about the food! Yes, I ordered deep-fried lobster bites and enjoyed every morsel!
In any case, other findings that were uncovered by this survey included that 80% of fairgoers love trying crazy new foods like chocolate-covered bacon, deep-fried candy bars, and more.
Although, the absolute favorite state fair foods are pretty standard fare.
- French fries
- Corn dogs
- Roasted corn
- Tacos
- Cheese curds
When it comes to desserts there weren't any real surprises either.
- Funnel cakes
- Cotton candy
- Snow cones
- Kettle corn
- Churros

Another important factor when it comes to state fairs is tradition. Over 87% of people responding to this state fair food survey indicated that state fairs remind them of their childhood which is another reason to love them.
But for many people, it's still all about the food!
