The outage is expected to last up to one week while crews replace radar dome panels and complete repainting work on the dome structure.

According to the NWS, this maintenance project is necessary to ensure the long-term reliability and performance of the radar system.

Once the radar is taken offline, it cannot be returned to service until all scheduled work has been completed.

The outage also cannot be postponed or interrupted, even if severe weather develops during the maintenance period.

While the Sioux Falls radar is unavailable, weather monitoring capabilities will continue through neighboring National Weather Service radar sites.

Radar coverage and data will be provided by surrounding systems located in Aberdeen (KABR), Des Moines (KDMX), Rapid City (KUDX), North Platte (KLNX), Chanhassen (KMPX), and Omaha (KOAX).

These radars will help meteorologists monitor weather conditions across the region and continue issuing forecasts and warnings as needed.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official weather forecasts, alerts, and local emergency notifications during the maintenance period.

While some radar imagery may appear different or provide less detailed local coverage, critical weather information will remain available through alternate radar sources and National Weather Service communications.

The National Weather Service apologizes for any inconvenience this temporary outage may cause and appreciates the public’s understanding as these important upgrades are completed.
