Sioux Falls Firefighters Rescue Victims of Early Morning Fire

Dakota News Now is reporting that in the early hours this Friday morning (May 30), thick smoke billowed from a townhouse complex on West 8th Street in Sioux Falls. At 4:45 a.m., a call came in to Sioux Falls Metro dispatch—flames were visible, and people were trapped.

Within minutes, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue arrived to find multiple townhouse units engulfed in flames. On one balcony, residents were stranded.

Firefighters sprang into action, rescuing the trapped individuals while dragging hoses through the smoky chaos to battle the flames. Crews combed every unit to ensure no one was left behind. After 45 minutes, the fire was finally brought under control.

In total, 46 firefighters, 11 fire trucks, and 3 support vehicles responded. Though no serious injuries were reported, the fire left significant damage and displaced 16 residents. The apartment building lacked a sprinkler system, raising concerns about fire preparedness.

As investigators work to determine the cause, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue urges everyone to test their smoke detectors regularly and have an emergency escape plan.
