Groundwork is now underway for two Sioux Falls city pools to receive extreme makeovers in the near future.

The City is preparing to give significant upgrades to Kuehn Park Pool and Frank Olson Park Pool beginning as early as this year. Both parks will be receiving modern aquatic features and new recreational spaces that are bound to make a huge splash for the residents of the Sioux Empire.

According to Dakota News Now, the Kuehn Park Pool and the pool area at Frank Olson Park were originally built roughly 40 to 50 years ago. Back then, Sioux Falls was a much smaller city with a population of around 60,000 to 70,000 people. Fast forward to today, and Sioux Falls has exploded in size. The city now has about 220,000 residents, and when you include surrounding communities in the metro area, that number approaches 300,000 people.

With that kind of growth, city leaders have decided it’s high time to modernize these aging facilities so they can better serve the community for decades to come.

One of the biggest transformations will happen at Kuehn Park on the west side of Sioux Falls. Plans call for the existing pool to be replaced with a full outdoor aquatic center. Meaning bigger slides, expanded water features, and modern amenities designed to accommodate the growing number of families who flock to the park every summer. The current Kuehn Park Pool will remain open while the new aquatic center is being built, with construction expected to begin later this month.

Meanwhile, Frank Olson Park on the city’s northeast side is set for an even larger overhaul. The project will not only update the Kirby Pool area but also include the construction of a brand-new Frank Olson Recreation Center designed to serve Sioux Falls residents year-round.

Plans for the indoor recreation center include a walking track, multiple indoor courts, and play areas for kids. The goal is to create a space where families can gather, stay active, and enjoy recreation no matter what Mother Nature has planned weather-wise for Sioux Falls throughout the year.

Construction on the Frank Olson Recreation Center and Kirby Pool project is expected to begin in early 2027, with completion currently targeted for 2029.
