From Darkness to Hope, Sioux Falls’ Powerful Mental Health Trek
If the reasons for suicide were better understood, it might be easier to stop. Unfortunately, that is not the way it works - - yet.
Here in South Dakota suicide is the leading cause of death for youth and young adults. Overall suicide rates in our state have been up over the last decade and once again, nearly 200 people died from suicide last year. In fact South Dakota has the 5th highest suicide rate in the country.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is presenting the Sioux Falls "Out of the Darkness" Community Walk this Saturday, September 21, from 12 PM to 3 PM at Levitt at the Falls. Registration is free and begins at Noon.
This event will be a day of hope, a day of encouraging people to open up and begin the conversation about suicide and its effect on them, their families, and friends.
It is also a day of fundraising with all money raised going to support research and programs through the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
All walk participants will be part of the Honor Bead ceremony in recognition of everyone's connection to the cause.
Brandy's Custom Cakery will have delicious doughnuts and cookies for everyone and Dunn Brothers will have the coffee to go with them. Plus Coca-Cola is bringing water and pop for thirsty walkers!
You will find information about how to start conversations with people you love and are concerned about, as well as materials on coping skills and many other mental health resources.
The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about. - AFSP
