Drivers traveling through Sioux Falls over the Memorial Day weekend should prepare for slower traffic and possible delays as lane closures begin on a busy stretch of South Minnesota Avenue.

Starting Friday, May 22, 2026, the inside northbound lane on South Minnesota Avenue between 69th Street and La Quinta Circle will be closed while contractors complete concrete repair work in the area.

The Sanford 69th and Minnesota Family Medicine & Laboratory is situated immediately at this intersection (6110 S. Minnesota Ave).

The temporary closure is expected to create heavier-than-normal traffic, especially during peak travel times throughout the holiday weekend.

According to city officials, the repair project is weather permitting and is anticipated to be completed within one week. Once repairs are finished, the lane will reopen to normal traffic flow.

Motorists traveling through the construction zone are encouraged to use caution, reduce speeds, and stay alert for workers and changing traffic patterns.

Drivers may also want to consider alternate routes to avoid congestion and minimize travel delays.

South Minnesota Avenue is one of the city’s busiest roadways, and holiday traffic combined with construction activity could lead to backups during the weekend.

Planning ahead and allowing extra travel time can help drivers avoid frustration while crews work to improve roadway conditions.
