The Mayor of Sioux Falls is seeking a 'shelter-in-place' order as the city grapples with the COVID-19 outbreak.

Mayor Paul TenHaken asked South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem for the order during a briefing on Monday, April 13.

According to Dakota News Now, TenHaken compared the city's outbreak to other similar-sized cities, saying Sioux Falls has a higher per-capita infection rate than others.

The shelter-in-place order would last for three-weeks and limit residents' non-essential activities outside the home.

The mayor said people would still be able to go to work, get groceries and gas, and do outdoor activities as long as they maintain social distancing guidelines.

TenHaken said it would be up to state officials when it comes to how to enforce the order.
