Raking Leaves in Sioux Falls? Here Are the Rules You Need to Know
Fall means beautiful colors in Sioux Falls, but it also means plenty of leaves to clean up. So, what are the rules when it comes to getting rid of all those leaves?
One of the biggest things Sioux Falls residents need to know is...don’t rake your leaves into the street or gutter.
The City specifically asks residents to keep leaves out of streets and gutters because they can clog storm drains and eventually make their way into local waterways.
Leaves are considered yard waste, and they cannot be placed in your regular garbage or recycling. Residents can arrange weekly curbside yard-waste collection through a licensed waste hauler.
Leaves can be placed in approved carts, personal containers, or lawn-and-leaf brown paper bags, depending on the hauler. Plastic bags are not allowed for yard-waste collection.
There is also a free option during the fall. Sioux Falls operates seasonal leaf and branch drop-off sites for residents.
In 2026, the sites are open through November 29, with locations on Lyon Boulevard and Chambers Street. Leaves and branches must be separated, and paper bags are accepted.
Loads must be covered with a tarp or transported in an enclosed vehicle.
