Sioux Falls Residents Now Eligible for Lower Flood Insurance Rates
Let's hope you never need to use it, but, if this spring ends up being anything like last spring, some of us most certainly will.
I'm talking about flood insurance, and now Sioux Falls residents are eligible for discounted flood insurance in the event we should need it.
Dakota News Now is reporting that Sioux Falls residents now save 15% on their flood insurance premiums, thanks to the city’s participation in FEMA’s Community Rating System.

This is possible due to the city's efforts to reduce flood risks and improve community awareness when it comes to the threat of flooding.
According to Dakota News Now, the discounted insurance premiums are based off of a Community Rating System in increments of 5%. The rating system ranges from a Class 1 to Class 10 community.
A Class 10 community would be a city that chooses not to participate in the program, therefore, receiving no discount.
Conversely, a Class 1 community is a full participant in the program, with its residents eligible to receive a 45% discount .
Dakota News Now reports that Sioux Falls is currently a Class 7 community, but with its ongoing improvements, the city has set a goal of becoming a Class 6 by 2026. Should that happen, residents of Sioux Falls would then be eligible for a 20% discount on flood insurance premiums.
In mid to late June of last year, heavy rainfall caused historic flooding in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area. The flooding was so severe in some areas, that it was deemed a 500 to 1000 year flood event.
Here's to hoping we get significant precipitation again this spring. We could certainly use it. Let's just hope it's not at catastrophic levels again.
