Sioux Falls Largest Intersection is About to Change in 2025
If I asked you where South Dakota's busiest and largest intersection is located, you would undoubtedly say somewhere in Sioux Falls, right? That's a no-brainer. But, can you guess what that intersection is?
Currently, the state's largest and busiest intersection is the 41st Street Diverging Diamond Interchange.
Sioux Falls has taken great steps recently to improve the safety and efficiency of the most traveled intersection in the state. And all that work and planning has really paid off, as travel on that stretch of 41st Street is so much smoother and faster now.
However, the 41st Street Diverging Diamond Interchange is about to take a backseat to another Sioux Falls intersection that is preparing to claim the title of the state's largest and most traveled intersection.
Once construction work is completed next year, the Veteran's Parkway Intersection on the city's eastside will become the new state champion in terms of size and traffic flow.
Dakota News Now reports that Phase 2-B of the Veteran's Parkway project is set to get underway next year with a major intersection renovation. Big changes are planned to make the area safer for pedestrians and create capacity for more commuters.
According to Dakota News Now, the plan includes creating six lanes in each direction plus multiple turn lanes.
Sioux Falls engineering project manager Shannon Ausen told Dakota News Now, that the next phase will also include three pedestrian underpasses for increased mobility and safety, which in turn will be a benefit to all modes of traffic.
Phase 2-B construction is slated to get underway next spring, with two main detours over the course of the project. Local traffic will still have access to the construction area while work is being done.
The city wants to remind motorists that once work on the project gets underway, commuters in the area should prepare themselves for potential congestion and detours.
