I am no fan of the cold weather months, especially in a state like South Dakota.

If you thought Sioux Falls was done with things that sting once winter packed up, think again. Sure, South Dakota’s brutally cold months may test your patience and sanity, but at least they give us a temporary break from the buzzing, biting, winged things that like to sting once spring arrives.

Now that April is here, many Sioux Falls residents are already noticing a familiar and unwelcome sign of the season: wasps are back… and they didn’t ease into it. It feels like they showed up early, fully caffeinated, and ready to reclaim their favorite hangouts, your deck, your garage, and yes, even your car.

Around this time of year, wasps and bees begin emerging from winter hibernation and immediately get to work building nests. Common spots include attics, sheds, roof eaves, and just about any quiet corner of your property. Thanks to the mild and relatively dry spring conditions we’ve seen across the Sioux Empire, experts say survival rates for these insects are higher, which could mean more activity than usual.

Before you declare war on every buzzing thing in sight, it’s worth noting that bees and wasps actually play a big role in our ecosystem. Bees are critical pollinators for crops and flowers, while wasps help as nature's pest controllers, feeding on aphids and caterpillars. In other words, they’re helpful, just not when they’re hovering over your burger at a backyard BBQ.

Of course, that’s little comfort if you’re allergic, or just not a fan of surprise fly-bys near your face by these little sky demons. If you’re trying to keep wasps and bees away this spring and summer in Sioux Falls, a few simple strategies can help. Keep food and sugary drinks covered, make sure trash cans are sealed, and consider using natural repellents like peppermint oil. You might also want to skip the bright colors and heavy fragrances; apparently, your favorite designer cologne doubles as a five-star resort invitation for “Sir Buzz-a-Lot” and all his pals.

Now that the bee and wasp season in Sioux Falls is officially underway. Do your best to coexist, stay alert, and maybe keep one eye on your drink at all times. And if it all gets to be too much, just remember, Old Man Winter will be back soon enough, and trust me, there's nothing that can be done to prevent the sting that he likes to bring for about five to six months each year in South Dakota!
