A new pilot project on 10th Street aims to create a safer, more welcoming downtown experience.

Downtown Sioux Falls is inviting the community to experience a new vision for 10th Street this summer through a month-long traffic calming pilot designed to create a safer, more welcoming, and more vibrant downtown environment.

Beginning June 29 and running through July 31, Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. (DTSF), in partnership with the City of Sioux Falls, will test temporary street design improvements along 10th Street between the viaduct exit at 2nd Avenue and Mall Avenue.

The pilot will use planters and reflective delineators to narrow travel lanes and evaluate how traffic calming measures can improve safety and enhance the downtown experience.

Throughout the project, visitors can enjoy a rotating lineup of local food trucks during lunch hours and select evening activations.

Picnic tables placed near the mural green space will provide a comfortable spot to gather, eat, and enjoy the area. Family-friendly art activities led by the City’s Arts Coordinator will also bring creativity and energy to the corridor.

“This project is about more than traffic—it’s about shaping the future of how people experience downtown,” said Brandon Hanson, CEO of DTSF. “We want downtown to be a destination, not a pass-through.”

The pilot will also help inform future discussions surrounding the long-term design and reconstruction of the viaducts while supporting the vision of complete streets.

Vehicle speeds and traffic volumes will be monitored throughout the study period, with results helping guide future planning efforts.

Community members are encouraged to visit the area, support local vendors, and experience how small changes can make a big difference in downtown Sioux Falls.
